Hamid Idris Awate

On the first of September 1961, on the slopes of Mount Adal, Hamid Idris Awate fired the first shots of the Eritrean armed struggle. A seasoned fighter and a leader of uncommon discipline, he is honored as the father of the revolution. He fell in May 1962 — but the war he began ended thirty years later in independence.
